******Partners, local allies, municipal authorities, and collaborators gathered to celebrate the achievements made over these four decades.
In a simple yet emotional ceremony to commemorate the organization’s 40th anniversary, Habitat Nicaragua brought together former collaborators, allies, partners, and municipal authorities who have worked closely with them. During the event, held on October 11, some figures were shared to highlight the organization’s contributions over the years.
Habitat Nicaragua has built and improved more than 20,000 homes, now housing over 100,000 people. Additionally, it has supported more than 27,000 people in post-disaster recovery processes and trained over 19,000 on topics such as safe housing, financial education, healthy living, climate change, and more.
“I feel very proud of the efficiency, resilience, and professional capacity of the team, not only the current one but also everyone who has been with Habitat over these four decades, as each of them dedicated part of their lives to the cause of dignified housing, making it possible for us to commemorate this day,” said Nancy Aróstegui, Country Director of Habitat Nicaragua.
On behalf of the organization, Aróstegui presented special recognitions to local allies who have worked shoulder-to-shoulder with Habitat Nicaragua for 10 years or more, as well as to collaborators and former collaborators with over 10 years of service in the organization.
Daniela Quesada, Director of Administration and Finance for the Latin America and Caribbean regional office of Habitat for Humanity International, emphasized that the work Habitat Nicaragua carries out with its public and private partners is timely and relevant, as it helps reduce the housing gap in Latin America.
“The United Nations estimates that the global housing deficit affects 2.8 billion people worldwide. According to 2022 data from CEPAL, 32% of the region’s population lives in poverty, with 13% in extreme poverty. But we are not here to review the difficulties of our region; we are here to recognize the importance of the work done by Habitat Nicaragua and its allies over these 40 years,” she said.
At the end of the ceremony, allied institutions also presented recognitions to Habitat Nicaragua for its support over the years and its contribution to dignified housing.
